McShep Essay; or, why these two gay space idiots have captured my heart
Some time ago, I promised silvarbelle and allofspace a McShep essay. Here it is! Big thanks to jamesie_boy for being my enabler, as well as thebiggest_lie for being, well, herself. They've dealt with my crazed McShep love for some time, and never tell me to shut up.

I *love* this post! Thank you so much for it! Thank you for saying all this in such an eloquent way. :-)

The last two pictures from FedCon 2010 - I had the time of my life watching those two on stage. They bring the best out of each other. :-)

I'm so glad you like it! I worked hard, it's good to know it's appreciated :P Haha, thank you for calling it eloquent - I never feel as though I am.

I would very much like to see Joe and David on stage together :D They have a fantastic chemistry on screen and from what I've seen in convention videos and read in con reports. I'd like to see it live :)

Unf, I'm sorry I haven't commented on this post before now, but I thoroughly enjoyed it! I have it in Memories & come back to it to find links I think of but can never find myself. ;-)

It seems to me that, despite the peer pressures to move on to current shows & be open in ones ship appreciations, there are many fen who regard J+R as their "first, best OTP". Since slashers are, almost by definition, hopelessly addicted readers & willing admirers of handsome men, it's not surprising that many folks we met in SGA fandom are now appreciating & even writing about other shows. (I'm very fond of Harold 'Finch'/John Reese in Person of Interest myself, tho' just like SGA I'm more interested in reading fanfic than watching every ep.) And, in practical terms, it's simply easier to get ideas & enthusiasm to write for an open fandom, where new shows regularly leave unanswered questions & big stupid blunders for fanfic to fix.

I guess I believe that it's possible to stay in love with one OTP while loving another too. Actually, I know that's possible, because I still love Kirk/Spock & K/S/McCoy, as well as Illya/Napoleon. I was quite a different person when I fell in love with them (& not just because I was younger), & if I fall in love with other OTPs in the future it will be different than how I love J+R. Just think how many slashers still vote for K/S in the Slash Madness tourneys! People still love that OTP after 50+ years--I'm pretty sure there will still be some crickety fen waving orthopedic pom-poms for McShep decades in the future. :-D

It's okay! I'm not sure we were even LJ friends when I wrote this? Either way, it's fine :D I'm so glad you love it enough to add it to your memories, wow!

I know a lot of SGA fans briefly went to Hawaii Five-0, and I know there are a few who are into Person of Interest. We as a fandom definitely shared an appreciation for good looking men. When shows are over, the fandom usually quites down: there's no longer any unanswered questions or blunders to fix. But I also know a lot of fans will be reminded of McShep and go, "Oh god, I miss them." It makes me feel good.

So it's definitely possible to stay in love with an OTP while moving on to other fandoms, other ships and/or OTPs. I'm heartened by McShep fans gathering together to win against K/S, even if it's the grandfather of slash :) I'm desperately hopeful that McShep lasts. Maybe not as long as Kirk/Spock - I would love, but I don't think it'll happen - but even the fandom lasting as long as Due South would be AMAZING :D
