So angry
So we've found a place. We were told that the people living there agreed to be out by February 1st...which came and went with no call from the manager. Okay. We call and the manager says she's just waiting on the title, which really shouldn't take that long. We waited a week and a half with no word, so we called her to get an update. She didn't pick up. We called, left messages, etc. for about a week and when we finally got a hold of her, we were told again that she's just waiting on the title. So we call the people who lived in the place before us and they agree to meet us to hand over the title (and then never show up, which they've done twice). We've agreed to meet the people to exchange the title tomorrow (again), but I guess the manager caught wind, because she called and said, "Since you're going behind my back, it's going to be another $350 to move in."

I'm so angry. We're poor, you dumbass, and the rest of the money we have was going to toward repairs. What the fuck is your actual problem? Are you 12? Oh you went behind my back - who cares, as long as we have the title and pay you your fucking money? What is with the increase in price? AND such a huge increase, too. I bet you she's going to pocket that damn money. We have so few options too, it's not like we can just go somewhere else.

Oh Jesus. That is so unbelievable! What the fuckity fuck? I wish I could advise you. I would be really hesitant continuing forward with both the manager and the family already there. I'm sorry, that is not one bit helpful, I know, but geeze. I really, really hope this works out. Hopefully someone who reads this can advise you. There's gotta be something to do. People shouldn't be treated like this.

Too bad you don't live in Oregon, we have 2 houses on our property.

Yeah, I keep saying we don't know what kind of shit they're going to pull in the future, so maybe we should look elsewhere. But we need a place that accepts pets and has somewhat good options for the low price range we can afford. It's not easy.

I wish we lived in Oregon too, just so we could hang out :)

it would be cool to have a real friend here, but seriously, if you don't get that title tomorrow or if anyone tries any more bullshit, you should try again for another place. I know this is incredibly difficult with pets and all, but I think you'd be setting yourselves up fro more trouble, more grief with these skanky, amoral people.

We're going to start calling around, although we don't have much hope on finding a cheap place in relatively good condition. But we'll see! It doesn't hurt to call around, either!

Thanks bb ♥

Well, hi there! We live outside of Portland to the south in Bumblef*ck, otherwise known as Mulino. It's about 1/2 way between Portland and Salem. Always thrilled to have another friend. Really. I will friend you back

If you haven't signed anything can you back out and look for something else? This is all sounding very shaky.

Nothing's been signed (so we can't even say that we settled on our original price). I do keep saying we don't know what kind of shit she's going to pull in the future, so maybe we should try looking elsewhere. There are trailer parks and stuff around here, but they have to allow pets, and unfortunately our purchase range is pretty cheap.

I would report her to one of the local agencies that deal with housing hon. Something doesn't sound right.

That sucks so bad. I'm with everyone else, it sounds shady and if this person is already mucking you about like this before you've even moved in, what are they gonna be like once you do?

What a fuckwit! I'm so sorry you & your family are going through such shit, & so angry that people with very little money are screwed around with like this! I know it's absolutely the last thing you & your parents want to hear but I have to agree with the others. I think it would be A BAD THING to move into this house, even as dogtired & disheartened & pressured as you are.

Just think: this manager (the current owner?) is on her BEST behavior now, trying to get you as tenants & part you from your money. She will likely be worse in the future, in all the blatent or obscure ways an emotionally unstable landlord/mortgage-holder can be. Even a comprehensive written lease/sales agreement can't completely protect you—it's as difficult to rule out malicious actions as it is to idiot-proof—& it also sounds as tho' she wouldn't hesitate to do something out-&-out illegal if she took a snit. She's already proved she's untrustworthy & happy to take advantage of your family's lack of options....

Ugh, I HATE to write shit like this! I'm so fortunate my spouse has a steady, good job now but I, too, spent a lotta years paddling as fast as I could to keep noses above water. I wish t'hell I had some good advice but I've bumbled along pretty blindly & trusted to fortune WAY more than comfortable. True story: one of the best strokes of luck my first spouse & I had, in my mid-20s, was when our idiot slumlord decided to try to sell the house we were renting with another couple. That involved a home appraisal, which soon led to a building inspection by the city, which resulted in the house being declared unsafe to sell. The city inspector, bless his little brass buttons, "happened" to mention that we could legally deposit our rent payments into an escrow bank account until the landlord completed repairs. So we notified the landlord we were doing that but—since we knew damn well he wouldn't fix things in the 3 months remaining in our lease—we were able to save up the deposit on our next rental & utilities. Still, pretty goddamned sad commentary when getting a house condemned out from under you is your stroke of GOOD luck....

I don't want to complicate things, but I wonder if your mother has a disability that would be helped by a Companion Animal. And, if so, if she has a sympathetic doctor to write a note for it.

People who have Companion Animals (usually one; at least in my state) do not have to pay pet deposits because the animal is not a "pet". They do have to pay for damages if anything happens. A Companion Animal is not a Service Animal, they don't need to be trained to be helpers.

I used to work on housing issues at a public interest law firm for people with disabilities. I'm not a lawyer. But, if you want to discuss some general things I'm happy to bounce some ideas around with you.

That sucks big time. And as you say, she's likely to pull crap like this again. Yet people who have pets are often at the mercy of people like this because you have so few options.

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. Seriously.
